About This Tool
E-Paper displays have fixed physical pigment palettes (such as 7-color ACeP or 3-color BWR) and cannot render natural 24-bit gradients. This tool runs Floyd-Steinberg and Atkinson error diffusion algorithms in client-side canvas and exports packed C hex arrays for GxEPD2 and Waveshare drivers.
How to Use
- 1
Upload any color photograph or illustration.
- 2
Select your hardware palette: Waveshare 7-Color ACeP (Spectra 6), 3-Color BWR, or 3-Color BWY.
- 3
Select dithering mode: Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion, Atkinson diffusion, or nearest color threshold.
- 4
Download the dithered preview image or copy the packed Arduino / ESP32 PROGMEM C-array.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the color gamut of Waveshare 7-color ACeP displays?
The Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP) display palette contains 7 micro-encapsulated electrophoretic pigments: Black, White, Green, Blue, Red, Yellow, and Orange.
Why is Atkinson dithering popular for e-paper displays?
Developed by Bill Atkinson for the original 1984 Macintosh, Atkinson diffusion distributes only 3/4 (75%) of the quantization error, preserving high local contrast and preventing murky color bleeding on low-resolution reflective screens.
