Contractor Quantity Estimating Formulas

Essential mathematical rules of thumb for concrete cubic yards, drywall sheets, stud framing, roof squares, and aggregate depths.

Trade Material Formulas

Concrete Volume in Cubic YardsConcrete Slabs & Footings
Cubic Yards = (Length [ft] × Width [ft] × Thickness [in] / 12) / 27

Rule of Thumb: Add 10% safety margin for ground unevenness and slab spillage.

Field Example: 10ft × 20ft patio at 4 inches thick: (10 × 20 × 0.333) / 27 = 2.47 cu yd + 10% = ~2.75 cu yd.

4x8 and 4x12 Sheet CountDrywall & Sheetrock
Total Sheets = Total Wall + Ceiling Sq Ft / Sheet Area (32 sq ft for 4x8, 48 sq ft for 4x12)

Rule of Thumb: Add 10% to 15% waste factor for door/window cutouts and angles.

Field Example: 800 sq ft room with 4x8 sheets: 800 / 32 = 25 sheets + 10% waste = 28 sheets.

16-Inch On-Center (OC) Stud CountWall Framing & Studs
Studs = (Wall Length in Feet × 0.75) + 1 (plus 2 per corner & 2 per door/window)

Rule of Thumb: Rule of thumb: 1 stud per linear foot of wall to cover plates, trimmers, and king studs.

Field Example: 40 linear feet of wall: 40 × 0.75 = 30 + 1 + 6 for corners/openings = ~37 to 40 studs.

Roof Area & Pitch MultiplierRoofing & Shingles
Actual Roof Area = Horizontal Flat Footprint × Pitch Factor (e.g. 4/12 = 1.054, 6/12 = 1.118, 8/12 = 1.202)

Rule of Thumb: 1 Roofing Square = 100 Square Feet (3 bundles of architectural shingles per square).

Field Example: 1,500 sq ft flat footprint with 6/12 pitch: 1,500 × 1.118 = 1,677 sq ft = 16.8 squares (~51 bundles).

Mulch, Dirt & Gravel YardsLandscaping & Aggregates
Cubic Yards = (Square Footage × Depth in Inches) / 324

Rule of Thumb: 1 cubic yard of mulch covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep (or 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep).

Field Example: 500 sq ft garden bed at 3 inches deep: (500 × 3) / 324 = 4.63 cubic yards.
