Material Estimation Summary
Estimating Flooring Waste and Box Overages
When installing hardwood, porcelain tile, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP), simply multiplying room length by width will result in material shortages. Trimming around door jambs, closet corners, and irregular baseboards creates scrap cutoffs that cannot always be reused.
10% Standard Rule
For rectangular rooms and straight-lay plank patterns, a 10% overage buffer covers standard end cuts and occasional damaged carton planks.
15%–20% Diagonal Patterns
Herringbone, chevron, or 45-degree diagonal tile layouts create triangular perimeter cuts requiring a minimum 15% to 20% waste allowance.
Dye Lot Consistency
Always order enough unopened cartons in a single purchase run to ensure all boxes share the identical factory dye lot number and grain calibration.
