Mastering Audio for Streaming Normalization

In modern digital audio distribution, the "loudness wars" have been superseded by algorithmic loudness normalization. Streaming platforms (Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Amazon Music) analyze the integrated LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) of uploaded songs and turn down tracks exceeding target levels.

The -14 LUFS Standard

Spotify and YouTube normalize music masters to approximately -14 LUFS. Delivering a track squashed to -7 LUFS causes automated downward gain attenuation without extra perceived loudness.

Inter-Sample True Peak

Lossy audio codecs (MP3, OGG, AAC) introduce reconstruction peaks during digital-to-analog conversion. Maintaining a True Peak ceiling of -1.0 dBFS prevents inter-sample clipping distortion.
